                Chapter Sixteen: The Aftermath

With Sandy gone, protecting the children became harder and harder for the remaining Guardians to do. Nightmares started to consume kid’s minds, making them full of fear instead of wonder. Fewer and fewer started to believe in the Guardians.

Pitch had to be stopped.

Jack already felt awful, thinking it was his fault that Sandy was gone. If Jack had waited for the other Guardians to wake up… if he had just listen to Sandy; maybe he would still be alive.

With Easter coming up, the four spirits tried their hardest to make it the best Easter for kids, hoping they would believe in them more. However, Jack got tricked by Pitch into leaving the Guardians behind when delivering the Easter eggs. While Jack was distracted by the Boogeyman, all the black fearlings came and crushed every egg, every basket; every hope.

When Jack returned, Easter was ruined. The kids no longer believed in Bunny. Thinking he messed up again, Jack tried to make amends, but it was too late. North, Bunny, and even Tooth thought Jack had betrayed them for Pitch, and they couldn't trust him any longer. Anger and guilt consumed Jack, and he quickly flew away, wanting to escape the problem’s of the world for a while. The remaining Guardians all left for North’s workshop, hoping to think of another solution to the growing crisis.

Bunny retired to bed, too worn out and heartbroken to stay awake. Not having any children believe in him or Easter made him extremely weak and weary. Tooth and North remained by the globe, watching the glow of believing children start to flicker away. They too were also tired, but they couldn't give up; they couldn't.

Soon, only 6 golden, flickering lights remained, indicating only 6 children still had faith in them. A black shadow suddenly started whirling around the globe; a maniacal laugh bouncing off the walls. Wind whipped around the building, sending papers and toys flying all over the place. Tooth and North frantically searched around, waiting for the devil himself to pop out.

Finally, black sand formed on the top of the globe, making the shape of Pitch Black. He appeared before the Guardians, looking and feeling stronger than ever before. He continued to laugh, and turned to the furry yeti’s, who had stopped building toys to look up at the dark man.

“There will be no need for toy’s this year, my fluffy friends!” Pitch cheered, “Christmas will be cancelled! Only six precious children remain.” He laughed darkly, making North scowl up at the spirit. Tooth tried to fly up to him to fight, but found her wings too heavy with lack of believers. Pitch looked down at the globe below him, and smirked evilly.

“Oh wait…” he paused, taking a step towards one of the lights. He lightly stepped on it, as if snuffing it out. “Make that five,” he scoffed, lifting his foot and revealing the light that was glowing was now gone.

He giggled almost like a little girl and skipped around to the other lights, stepping on them with glee as they went out one by one. Santa Clause and the Tooth fairy looked in horror as the lights slowly went out. Tooth found her feathers starting to fall off. North suddenly felt very old, using his sword as a cane to help him stay up. Both of them started to turn paler and paler as the seconds passed.

“Four! Three! Two!” He cackled. Only one remained now. The Guardians held their breath, feeling completely helpless. Pitch smiled darkly at it, and raised his arm. He snapped his fingers, expecting the light to immediately flicker out.

But it didn't.

Confused, Pitch snapped his fingers again, but the light remained glowing. His instant bliss turned to frustration as he glared down at the golden light.

One,” He growled darkly. As soon as he came, he quickly dissolved into a blob of black sand, disappearing out the window and into the skies. North and Tooth watched him leave, relieved, but also very alarmed.

“He’s going after the remaining child!” Tooth yelled, “North! We have to protect him or her! If he or she stops believing, then we’re gone for good!

North looked at his friend and nodded his head. His heavy Russian accent soft, but booming.

“I completely agree. I will get Bunny.” With that, he slowly made his way to Bunny’s room, hobbling with his sword. Since Tooth couldn't fly, she walked over to the globe and looked at the remaining light in silence. The small light continued to shine, making Tooth’s heart fill with hope. She was just about to turn away when something else caught her eye. She quickly turned back to the globe, and gasped.

There was another light.

This one was different though, unlike one Tooth had ever seen before. Instead of it being a golden colour, it glowed almost a silver colour. It was also very weak, almost invisible against the globe. However, there was still a sparkle there, indicating someone else still believed in them.

Excitement and relief flooded over Tooth, and she began to scream.

North! Bunny! Come here! There’s another light! There’s another light!!” She cheered, relieved that there wasn't just one child left. North quickly emerged from behind a doorway, slowly making his way over. Bunny was nowhere to be found.

“Where’s Bunnymund?” Tooth questioned, her head flickering around in search of the 6 foot rabbit. North turned his head to his shoulder; Tooth worriedly waited for him to respond. Suddenly, Tooth saw movement from behind North’s neck, and out emerged a fluffy gray blob.

Bunnymund.

“No one believing in Easter Bunny or Easter took its toll on our friend,” North sighed, looking down sadly; the once bad-ass Guardian was now nothing but a puff ball.

Bunnymund was tiny, his floppy ears were huge compared to his body. His eyes were much bigger too, and he had the most adorable little paws ever. As terrible as it was, Tooth couldn't help but stifle a laugh at the Guardian before her.

Oy! And what do you think you’re laughin’ at?” Bunny spoke, his Australian accent having a sharp tone to it. A look of anger was etched into his face as he crossed his tiny paws. This just made Tooth laugh harder.

L-look at you! You’re-you’re so cuuuhuhuuute~!” She cackled. She suddenly reached out and grabbed Bunny off of North’s shoulders, making Bunny squirm.

Hey now! You put me down, ya crazy lass!” He hollered, trying to escape the fairy’s grip. But it was useless. Tooth continued to giggle and cuddle the tiny Guardian.

“Ohhh, look at how fluffy you are~!” She cooed, “You’re just the sweetest little thing! Yes you are! Yes you are~!” He was just about to object when she started to scratch behind his ear. Not able to control himself, he moaned in pleasure, his eyes rolling back, slouching into her touch, and his leg thumping rapidly. Tooth continued to squeal.

Tooth,” North interrupted, making the fairy and rabbit look up at the large man. He looked seriously at the two Guardians, showing no emotion what-so-ever. “As… amusing as it is…”

Bunny shot North a dirty look.

“… We must focus. The children are at stake. We do not have time for fun and games anymore.” Tooth and Bunny looked at each other, feeling bad for getting distracted so easily.

“Now Tooth,” North continued, “You said there was another glowing light?”

The fairy gasped in realization, momentarily forgetting about the second light. Without even realizing, she had dropped Bunnymund, making him crash to the ground. He slowly got up and grumbled at the ditsy fairy, hopping towards the globe.

“That’s right!” She piped, “Quick! Come see!”

Tooth hurriedly skipped toward the globe and scanned the sphere. After finally pinpointing the silver light, she pointed her finger and grinned.

“Right here! There’s another light right here!” She motioned. However, a look of confusion crossed her face, and she turned to the legendary Man in Red. “But… I've never seen one that glows silver… What does it mean?

North got up close to examine the light, his mind deep in thought as he rubbed his beard. After a moment’s pause, North finally responded.

“That’s because this isn't a child.” North stated. He turned his back to the globe and crossed his arms, looking out the skylight and up at the moon.

Bunny and Tooth gave each other a look, then turned back to North. Bunny instantly spoke up.

“Wait wait wait, are you tryin’ to tell us, that that silver light… is an adult?

North continued to look at the moon, his eyes furrowed in thought. “Precisely.”

“But-But is that even possible?” Tooth questioned, still confused. “I mean, adults have never believed in us, they don’t! Only children do!”

North turned to face the other two Guardians. “I know. It is hard to believe. Even I am having hard time trying to process it.” He stated. “But. There is still a bit of a child in everyone, no matter how old they get.” North walked toward the other Guardians, his eyes soft, but bright.

“I know it’s our duty to only protect children, but this person, this soul… He or she still believes in us,” He paused, “And it is our duty to protect anyone who still believes.”

With that, North smiled softly and started to hobble towards the sleigh. “Now come on!” he hollered, hope lighting up his face. “We have to find this person before Pitch does!”

Glancing at each other quickly and smiling, Tooth and Bunny ran towards the sleigh. Ready to fly towards and protect the mysterious silver illumination, and hopefully bring light back into the darkening world.
