              Chapter Thirty-Two: The Explanation

You all freeze at North’s words. You had heard stories about Santa and Mrs. Clause as a child, but it never occurred to you where she might be now. Even the other Guardians shared a look of surprise. Though they had been curious about it, North had never fully opened up to the story.

North suddenly reached under the neck of his shirt and pulled out what seemed to be a tiny, silver locket. He studied it for a moment, then spoke up.

“She was my soul mate,” he murmured fondly. “She was human, like yourself,” He then pointed to you, making your heart drop a bit. The way North spoke made you start to worry. Whatever he was going to say wasn't going to be good.

“She was wonderful lady. Strong, independent, and tough, but also kind, loving, and full of life… Of course, since we were soul mates, we had our similarities and differences. Like me, she saw the wonder in everything. She helped me make new ideas, discover more things. However, she didn't seem to understand my obsession with cookies and sweets…” You couldn't help but laugh lightly at the older spirit’s childish like ways.

“We lived many years together, happy as can be… However, everything good can end in an instant.” North’s hand clutched tightly around the locket, making your stomach churn. A dark look crossed North’s features as he continued.

“Pitch Black was jealous of me and my dear wife. We were living such happy lives while his had just ended with his family.” he paused. “So in the middle of the night… the dark spirit snuck into my workshop while I was away delivering presents… and he killed her… My precious Dorogoy* … she was gone.

North did not cry. His voiced wavered, and his eyes stung, but he would not cry. He took a moment to compose himself, his hand still clutching onto the locket. You watched the childhood legend crumble slightly, horror seizing your body. You now understood why North had a deep hatred for Pitch. How twisted and depressed the dark spirit must have been to do such a thing. After a few moments, North lifted his head, his voice and face calm.

“That was hundreds of years ago.” He murmured. “And though it pains me to say it, there is nothing I can do to bring her back… not even the power of belief." He closed his eyes for a moment, but continued to speak.

“Guardians cannot die any humanly death. They can only die if they are killed by another spirit. Nothing more. But, if something of their’s remains in safe keeping, then it is possible to bring them back to life…”

He then turned to Sandy. “That is why you are here now. Yes, you died. But because (Name) still had a piece of your heart, you were able to come back to life.

Sandy absorbed the new information, baffled at all of the new knowledge he had. North then locked eyes with you, a look of seriousness etched on his face.

“However, the soul mate of a Guardian works differently. The soul mate of a Guardian can still die any mortal death. Starvation, drowning… murder…” His voice cracked on the last word, making you shudder.

“And you cannot bring them back once they are dead… Trust me, I have tried many times…” North broke his gaze on you for a moment, his eyes clouding over. He instantly looked back up after a split second.

But.” He continued. “They cannot die of old age. If the Guardian’s soul mate is careful… they are granted an immortal life.”

All eyes instantly turned to you, looks of realization finally sinking in. You inhaled sharply. An immortal life? You were… immortal?

North didn't seem to be finished with his story. “Bunny was right about Pitch falling in love with a human and having a family, that much is true.” Bunnymund instantly stood up straight at the mention of his name. North continued. “However, he was missing a few facts.

“Pitch did fall in love, yes, but she was his soul mate. They had a beautiful daughter together, whom he treasured with all of his heart. His family was all he had, and he would've done anything to keep them safe…

“He was a normal spirit once. In fact, the finest army general of the Lunar people. Kozmotis Pitchiner was their greatest hero, keeping the nightmare men away and protecting the royal family; including Manny. It was his job to keep the fearlings and dark souls trapped in their prison in the Golden Age. That, of course, made him a mortal enemy to the Nightmare Men, and they planned for their revenge.

“One night, thousands of them attacked Pitch’s home while he was busy at work. They captured his family, burned his home; took away his purpose of living. When Pitch heard the news, he fled home as fast as he could, but by the time he arrived, it was too late.” North paused, sadness clouding over his eyes. “His house was destroyed, and his dear wife and precious daughter were gone… Dead, kidnapped, nobody knows. He never saw them again…

“That broke Pitch; his world no longer worth anything anymore. He dedicated the rest of his meaningless life guarding the captured fearlings. But they taunted him. They verbally abused the already broken spirit and caused him more suffering. Though Pitch was strong, he grew weaker and wearier with each passing day of their cries.

"One day, they impersonated his daughter’s voice, making him think she was trapped in their with the fearlings. He didn't want to get his hopes up, but he never knew what happened to his family; his daughter might actually be trapped in the cell. A spark of hope lit up in Pitch’s eyes and he quickly opened the door to save her, to see if she was actually there; only to realize he was tricked.

“… That’s all it took. The fearlings quickly consumed his body, taking control of his mind against his will. And Kozmotis Pitchiner, the great general and hero of the Lunar armies fell and turned into Pitch Black, the King of Nightmares.”

Bunny and Tooth shared a look of pity for the Boogieman, not realizing how much pain he had gone through. You yourself were shell-shocked. At first, you though Pitch was the devil himself; no feelings, no soul, no heart. But now that you knew his past, his horrible, heart wrenching past... your vision of the Boogeyman was much different comparing to what it was before. The Spirit of Wonder continued.

“When Pitch discovered I had a wife, something inside of him must have snapped. Knowing that I was happy while he had to suffer without his wife or daughter made him outraged. He must have wanted me to suffer like he did; live with the pain he was dealing with for the rest of my life… His inner depression and anger led him to do something drastic…

“Mrs. Clause was living an immortal life with me… but I never thought something so horrid would happen to her…” North paused. “I should have been more careful, should have protected her more… but I didn't realize how much it would burn me until it was too late…

You were all quiet for what felt like hours. The children continued to play obliviously, but not even their laughter could brighten the mood of the group. You felt absolutely awful. North’s and Pitch’s stories made you want to curl up in a ball and weep.

You suddenly felt Sandy’s hand slip into yours, giving it a reassuring squeeze as if he knew what you were feeling. You feel his eyes on you, and you turn your head to face him. The golden man gave you a soft, comforting smile, and squeezed your hand again. You couldn't help but give a small smile back, appreciating his kind gesture. Eventually, North spoke up once more.

“But now is not time for sorrow.” He looked up, his eyes no longer filled with sorrow, but instead with peace.

“Yes, the loss was hard, and I still miss her with all my heart. But I know she will never be gone, for she will always be in my heart. And because of it, I have realized how precious life is. It has helped me to protect the children of the world more than ever before. For that, I am eternally grateful…” North bowed his head slightly, and tucked the locket back behind his shirt. You couldn't help but marvel at the Man in Red’s bravery. Truly he was the strongest spirit you knew.

“Besides, we have just defeated Pitch in a moment of despair!” He bellowed, a beaming smile once again cracking through. “Jack finally found his center!” The said-teenage spirit blushed under the praise.

“And our dear friend Sandy has found soul mate!” With that, his head flung back in a laugh.

Suddenly, the large Russian man stepped forward and picked you up in his strong hands. You squeal in surprise as you were airborne. North then hollered “Dobro pozhalovat' v sem'yu!**”, and kissed both of your cheeks. After placing you down, you stood rigid and wide eyed, not quite believing what just happened.

Santa Clause had just kissed your cheeks.

Bunny and Jack burst into laughter, clutching their stomachs desperately at the look on your face. Even Tooth was trying her best to hold in her giggles. North danced obliviously around the group again, like a little child on Christmas morning.

Sandy floated closer to you, his own tingling laughter escaping his lips. However, after snapping out of your trance, you immediately glare at the golden spirit. Sandy instantly shut his mouth, but bit back his smile that was forcing it’s way through. Realizing there was no point in being angry, your expression softened, and you find yourself laughing over the situation as well.

Chapter Thirty-Two~ :la:

*Dorogory : means "darling" in Russian c:
Therefore, North was talking about his darling ;u;

** Dobro pozhalovat' v sem'yu ! : means "Welcome to the family!" :giggle:

Didn't think you'd be learning Russian did ya~? ;D xD

`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.

Ok. So let me explain.

Pitch's entire story is based off of "The Guardians" series by William Joyce. His whole family story actually happened to him. Y'know the golden butterflies that flew over his head when he was knocked out in the movie? His daughter's favorite thing was butterflies  (fun, but sad, fact). and yes, Kozmotis Pitchiner was his actual name before he became "evil" x)
But Pitch killing North's wife is my own little twist :iconheplz: I figured Pitch seeing his greatest enemy having the time of his life with his wife would make him snap. Especially after the hard life he's been through; his family dying, being controlled by fearlings, not being believed in, ect. :c

Depressing chapter is depressing Depressed

And again, the whole "soul mates" thing is my idea :3 I just though it would be cute  xDD I believe in them personally c:

Honestly, if you haven't already read the series, I would HIGHLY recommend it ;u; It is a bit childish at times, but then again, it IS a children's book x3 But my story has lots of facts based on the book as well, so if there are some parts you may not understand, then reading the books really help to clear the air c:

If you have any questions, or are confused, then let me know c: I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability ^u^

Oh wow, that got really lengthy o: Sorry bout that! ^^; xD

STILL MORE TO COME~! :dummy: Only 5 chapters left peeps ;D

Have your feelings towards Pitch changed? Is he still considered evil? And why can you bend dream sand?
Read on to find out~
